To create a wax seal hot wax is dripped onto a portion of a letter. A seal is then pressed on top of the pile of wax to leave the desired impression (signatory mark).
Wax seals were used in a similar fashion to how signatures are used today. The seals aid in authenticating the identity of the writer.
Many of the seals were destroyed when the owner passed away, therefore, few have remained in good condition.
