A Lieutenant-Colonel in the American army, he served as close assistant and secretary to General George Washington.
Hamilton had long wanted troops to command. General Washington finally gave him a battalion to command at Yorktown. His mission was to take the British redoubt number 10. He accomplished his mission, which contributed to the British being forced surrender.
He was the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States.
Along with John Jay and James Madison, he wrote letters to newspapers encouraging the approval of the new Constitution. These letters were later published as the influential book, "The Federalist."
