WHO: BENJAMIN WEST

1738-1820

Born in 1738, he moved to England in 1763 and stayed in Europe the rest of his life.

He was one of the first American artists to acquire a wide reputation in Europe.

He exerted considerable influence on the development of art in the United States.

First major artist to stop painting people in Greek and Roman dress.

He painted many famous people, including King George III and Benjamin Franklin.
