WHO: ETHAN ALLEN

1738-1789

He organized a group of men called the Green Mountain Boys to fight the British decree stating that the land of the New Hampshire Grants belonged to New York. This decree was made after people had settled land in the New Hampshire Grants and caused many land rights disputes. The New Hampshire Grants became the 14th state of Vermont in 1791.

With Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775 - one of the first important victories of the American Revolution.

Organized the Green Mountain Boys to fight the British decree that the land of the New Hampshire Grants belonged to New York.

In early fall of 1775, he tried to seize Montreal, Canada, but was captured by the British and held captive until 1778.
