WHO: JOSEPH BRANT

1742-1807

He was a Mohawk Indian leader and commanded Iroquois forces that fought for the British during the Revolutionary War.

As a young man, Brant was befriended by the British and sent to school. He became a Christian and missionary among his people.

He became a colonel in the British army and led raids on settlements that caused a great amount of damage.

His Indian name was Thayendanegea.

After the war, he moved to Canada and continued his missionary work.
