A very wealthy Boston merchant who used his wealth and influence in the fight for independence.
Considered to be one of the most dangerous revolutionaries by the British, he was nearly arrested by them, but Paul Revere, during his midnight ride, was able to warn him and Sam Adams of the danger and they escaped capture.
He was president of the First and Second Continental Congresses.
He was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. A large reward was offered by the British for his capture and upon signing this famous document he said, "The British ministry can read that name without spectacles; let them double their reward."
His bold signature has led to the popular phrase today - when signing their names, people are said to have written their "John Hancock."
He presided over the convention that adopted the Massachusetts constitution in 1780, and became the first governor of Massachusetts, serving nine terms.
