WHO: ADMIRAL LORD RICHARD HOWE

1726-1799

He commanded the British Fleet in America during the Revolutionary War.

Nicknamed "Black Dick" because it was said he never smiled until a battle was about to begin.

He was made Peace Commissioner by King George III to try and stop the American rebellion , but his meeting with Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge was unsuccessful.

He was the elder brother of General William Howe, who commanded the British army in America from 1775 to 1778.
