Orphaned as a result of an Indian raid, she was raised by relatives and married John Corbin.
She became a "camp follower" when her husband joined the Army and was taught how to load and fire cannons by her husband and other soldiers.
After her husband was killed during a battle against Hessian infantry, she continued to fight during the battle by loading and firing the cannon and was severely wounded.
She was the first American woman to be wounded on the battlefield fighting for American independence.
She was the first woman to be paid a pension by the United States government for service to her country.
