WHO: GENERAL WILLIAM HOWE

1729-1814

He replaced General Gage as the commander of the British Army in America during the early years of the Revolution, from 1775 to 1778.

He won the battles at Long Island, White Plains, and Brandywine and occupied Philadelphia, but he was unable to defeat the Americans. He resigned his post in 1778 and was succeeded by Sir Henry Clinton.

His brother Admiral Lord Richard Howe commanded the British fleet in America.
